Moorings in Soton...

Looks like a great place, I'm guessing that some of the pontoons dry out and the more expensive ones mid river are OK, so similar to Eastlands at the top of the Hamble?

hi Ian, its only some Trailer Sailor berths that dry out on a Spring tide at Eastlands...all the others are afloat all the time even on the lowest of springs.....

SWMBO wants to have a berth at Eastlands, when we were there in 2002/4 she loved the slow wander down the Hamble, plus its really easy to get there.

Possibly not the area you're looking at, but Southampton Drystack mentioned today (on their Facebook page) that they're taking over the running of Quayside marina - opposite SDS, and the next marina up from Kemps Quay. I don't know, but I've a feeling that it will be made a touch more up market that what's currently there.

Collected my used drive on EZ Dock from the Isle of Wight today. Installed at Kemps and setup for my Mariah.
Even with all of the available extra flotation attached still a very small part of the stern is sitting in the water. Very happy so far, and the staff at Kemps have been very helpful.

Wow Chris...a used drive on, bet that's a rarity. Its a shame you have to store it with the leg in the trailer position, it might be worth just anti fouling the leg so it can be stored in the down position to save the bellows from setting in the stretched position. Out of interest, how easy is it to get the boat on and off?

Anna,
Thanks for that, I think its worth a look see.

Ian. Yes was not sure I was going to find one at a good price. Did not want to spend too much money. So far all seems ok. Some more work to be done in terms of securing the dock . Currently it's held in place with 4 mooring lines.

Getting off has not been to bad. Needs the drive all the way down and a good hard shot of reverse. As soon as she starts moving. Shut off the throttle and she rolls down into the water.

Ian. How long does the drive need to be in the trailer position to cause problems with the bellows?

tbh honest if you use the genuine mercruiser bellows and change them within the service interval I can't see it as being a problem. It's when the rubber gets a bit old and tired that it gets stiff and looses shape / elasticity. If you monitor it which will be easy enough as it's out the water, making sure it remains soft and pliable you should be OK. (Anybody experience different?) UV perishing might be the biggest bugbear. Biggest issue I ever had was when in the water with the bellows extended as we were tidal and shallow, was barnacles attaching and ruining shape or chaffing the rubber when the leg was then put down, or worse causing the bellows to slip off (this was exhaust, no damage issue but the worst one to put on). You wont have this problem.
