Petrol and Diesel below £1

£1 a gallon = about 22p a litre

I remember that also it was called the pound a gallon barrier. Soon afterwards they started selling it in ltrs and ever since we have been screwed.

I also remember the pound a pint barrier.

It is just about getting old and loosing your hair and other things

I remember as a child seeing some petrol pumps in Christchurch marked up at 50p per gallon

No doubt everyone thought that expensive at the time! Likewise, we will probably look back in future years and think "Wow, wasn't fuel cheap in 2016..." - hold that thought as you fill the tank and it won't seem so bad :D

shibbs wrote:So the million dollar question, how long will it stay low... Ed, you correctly predicted last year that it would drop by another 5p, and it did.. Come on, let's have another prediction.. :ugeek:

I wish I knew!!!

Gut feeling? Lets see how wrong I will be, I reckon once the mental barrier of £1/l has been broken prices may in some areas drop below 90p litre, if what I have read is to be be believed. I reckon prices may hover below /around £1 for around 18months. Don't ask me why. I could be TOTALLY wrong. I just think that's what will happen before the oversupply starts to play out and prices start rising.

Will be fun to read back on this in a years time..

When I started motoring in 1971 I was paying 35p per gallon (7shillings in real money)

This would be £4.84 now taking inflation into account.

This works out at £1.06 per litre so we're now paying less for petrol that we were then!

I think something around a pound a litre for road fuel is about right compared to the longer term past.
Just under a pound may seem cheap but I think its about where it should be. We have been ripped of for road fuel in the recent past.

Like Colin when Learnt to drive (1974) fuel less than £1 per gallon.

There was a long period when it just teetered below a £1 gall .. then the moment it went over, just kept going up & up.

Shows how metrication has softened peoples approach ........ by only seeing litre prices, the almost weekly increase was simply accepted ... now everyone is getting very excited about is dropping to £5 a gallon !

I am happy to take any drop, but you need to temper with realism ... UK fuel prices are scandalous.

This is all very well but I have a boat sat down at Swanwick full to the brim with petrol that I paid £1.35 a litre for, (Premier's fuel at cost!!!!! at the time).
I haven't been able to use the boat since and by the time I have used that tank full, I bet the price will be back up to £1.50 a litre.
I suppose you win some, you lose some, but you don't win many and you lose an awful lot.
The last time I looked fuel at cost was more than £1.20 per litre, anyone know what it is at MDL?

I started on the road with my BSA Bantam D14/4 around about 1970/71. I seem to remember paying four shillings and sixpence for petrol plus another sixpence for a shot of two stroke oil, that makes five shillings a gallon, just before decimalisation in Feb 1971. From 25 pence to Colin's 35 pence would be a big jump, is one of us going senile?

Just coming out of a senile haze, maybe I paid four and six but the tank held less than a gallon so it was five bob to fill up, absolute bargain!!!!!!!!!!

I showed this post to an Irish friend who then said..."Dat's no problem sir, empty der tank, tip it away and refill it with der cheaper petrol and you'll be fown, it'll be cheaper"

Ummm, maybe not and I certainly see where you are coming from. I have to say Paul, I don't see it rising in price for the short term, so hopefully if you can get out in the interim and use what's in there then get a good fill of cheaper fuel for the summer. :)
