Fuel cost for a day

Knowing how much my wife uses the heating over the weekend I'm thinking of trying for a 50/50 split next time I fill up......... :?

Can I ask what happens to those receipts that say 60/40 split on them. What is supposed to be done with them. And what happens in reality

I cannot give a typical days out fuel usage on my boats as I do not do any day trips in the way you all seem to do down south. But I can give 2 examples of how most engine and boat combinations use very similar quantities of fuel.
Firstly 2 RIB,s both 6 mtr one with 90hp the other 115hp outboards Fleetwood to Douglas I.o.M both used 80ltr return trip.
Next Sealine S24 KAD 32 same trip 80ltr.

So you see at cruising speed all used the same amount of fuel, that does not mean they cost the same, the 90 o/b was probably beyond its most economical trying to keep up with the less stressed 115 o/b. The Kad was running at its best cruise about 21-22 knots, the diesel was without doubt the cheapest as red diesel is considerably cheaper than petrol, with or without the split, cans or fuel berths.

All returned about 0.7 ltr/mile, although the RIB's did the trip faster.

I think I can claim the cheapest trip:

Left Gosport about 7:00 in the evening with 8 on board, Arrived Cherbourg about 10:00 the next morning. Fuel cost zero. :D :D :D

Return trip we did waste about 15 minutes fuel getting out of Cherbourg and about 10 minutes mooring up cos we were too tired to do it under sail.

Probable total cost for the weekend about 60p :mrgreen:

There's something special about crossing the Channel completely wind powered.

To the tax man:

No sir. Do you know how much energy is required to keep two adults and 3 kids in hot water for showers and washing up? Hot water takes a lot of energy. Then sir. Do you have any idea just how power hungry the little sods are. What with TV's and every electronic device in this world considered a necessity. I wont even begin sir to tell you about 147 incandescent bulbs I have on the boat. Yes sir! 147! And the blasted wife and kids want every single one on 24/7. Sir my inverter is rioting. My genny is on it's knees and my batteries always on the verge of corruption. Heat sir? No we actually use little of that but we sometimes have to run the genny for the aircon. You know sir. I think I need a 50 50 split, can I ask for a refund?

Dont forget Colin, for a weekend away, travel is averaging just 4 hrs out of 48. The rest of the time the boat is consuming energy

I work on an average of 2.2 miles per gallon. so depends how far I go just for example Saxon Wharf to Cowes is 11 miles each way, and that is a short trip.
I just fill up when its required. The fuel usage is minor expense compared to storage ETC .

Some other I hope useful info.

I just returned from the SWSB Rally in Brixham and with 2 very full days of boating on my Fletcher 17 bow rider with 115 hp 2 stroke outboard I used about 70 ltrs and about 2 ltrs of oil. So cost of boat fuel for the weekend was about £100 for the 2 days. Excellent value in my book
