lubes and oils

by betty boop » 21 Apr 2017, 08:07

Searching the internet of things about gear oil and it occurs to me that we pay to much for rebranded oil & lubes - interested to hear if anyone has any thought on the same?
Quicksilver Hi performance gear lube retails at £20-25/ L at synthetic 80W90 grade.

If I google synthetic 80W90 gear lube I find the cheapest on ebay at £19/5L - thats quite a significant difference, Euro parts retail a between £9/L & £12/L - the Seirra marine brand retails on keypart at £15/L

So whilst I'm going to buy from Keypart I wonder what is the difference? Mercrusier didnt reinvent the wheel when they filled the Alpha with gear lube and the some folks in the US seem to use car fluid in marine boxes- So it begs the question Do we follow like sheep and pay OTT for everything boat related?

I've used Sierra gear oil in the past, it seems similar to Quicksilver High Performance oil but came back to Quicksilver.

What I would add is that I tested some old Quicksilver oil I took out last year when I did and oil change and added some water. It mixed and emulsified but not to the degree I expected and to which I have found with ordinary gear box oil I had for the Land Rover, which I also tested. Also, I think the price difference between the two was about £7 something or other (Keypart £19 ,you have to but two lots, I think its less than £4 a bottle dearer than Sierra) so at £3000 for a new leg or loads of money for a rebuild, my decision was settled. :)

For the outdrive oil I have only used the recommended product - volvo penta in my case .

Some things I am happy to use alternatives - including engine oil and filters.

I think this is how we talk ourselves into giving people more money than we need to and also once we have done that we in our own ways encourage others to do the same.

This is made even more silly given the very low number of hours our engines do

I cant figure out the engine oil visco, no one sells Mercrusier engine oil other tan Seirra. they must be rebadging something, I'll save that one for next years oil change though

I don't have experience of gear oils so would have to guess at which brand looked the same and if cost was worth the risk etc. following on from the gear oil confusion I have to laugh at the other two price hikes from Friday

Bellows adhesive, £12 a tube from Quicksilver, this lead me to ask Google and MANY folks on Iboats.com had already written that is is simply rebadged evostick contact adhesive. Quick trip to Wilko - £2 for a tube twice the size. Why?

Mercrusier shift cable install tool. retailing for £22 on Ebay, so I bought one thinking I need it. imagine my horror when it arrived as a 9/16 long reach socket welded to a 19mm nut on one end. they didnt even hide the 2 pieces nor did they chrome it. it took me 15 mins to weld a 19mm nut to the end of my 9/16 socket, and that includes filing away splashes from my very bad welding. - 1 Mercrusier tool to return or sell on ebay £20 if anyone is interested

Bellows adhesive at £12 a tube is outrageous, it is after all only impact adhesive and is also only used to hold the bellows in place until it's clamped. That shift cable tool is also a rip off, I could have posted you mine. I made it out of a long reach socket welded by a local garage to a 9/16th socket.

Isn't the oil 10/40?

now Im really P'sed I needed a seal part 25-48171 a double oil seal on the Gen 2 drive lube transfer from bell housing to upper gear casing. what came off was a square section oil seal x 2 so I paid £7 for 2 seals to be posted. when they arrived all I got was 2 standard O rings in a nice Barrus zip bag, of which I have a box of 200+ in the workshop. a change of design I assume as last time I ordered this part it was as the original

Thats 2 pints of beer wasted   :o
