Toneau Button Oil

by Bigplumbs » 09 Apr 2017, 19:14

I am getting her ready and my Toneau buttons are a little stiff and crusty. Do you all just use 3 in 1 oil on them WD40 or something else

Only vaseline. I've found the golden rule with all boat fabrics is if you wouldnt use a product on your own skin dont use it. As the fabric round the press stud is usually the first to harden and crack on aging tarps my guess is those ones have been subjected to various greases, waxes and cleaning chemicals in their life.

Thanks Bruce never thought of that. The actual fabric is ok it is just the metal around the button on the boat and indeed the tarp. I will use as you suggest

There's some stuff call Snap Stick that is designed for snap fasteners - it comes in a small lipstick-type applicator. Other than that, some silicone spray might be effective and should not leave a greasy residue.

Agreed, vaseline, or silicone grease. Applied sparingly.

I've got one of there, excellent for tight canvas.

Thanks for the tip.
The chief officer purchased some Vaseline ..... well actually unbanded petroleum jelly . ......... it was 65p for 200ml.
I have also applied some to the zips - which seemed to have a benefit.
