Mooring shortages?

by NickT » 09 Feb 2015, 19:57

Hi All,

I just wondered if any members who moor their boats in a marina have had any problems in securing a berth.

Had a fright last week when Foulk's boatyard at the top of the Hamble said they may not be able to accommodate me.

EEEKK!

Tense wait for a week while they worked out the berthing plan and they called yesterday to say they could squeeze me in.

Is this a general trend or just specific to that boatyard perhaps?

We had a choice of 6 berths at MDL Torquay (6metre boat).

Torquay inner harbour has an estimated 3 year waiting list, and the waiting list for the outer harbour is closed with an estimated 10 years waiting for those already on the list!

They should give priority to the people who want to use the marina rather than those with floating caravans that make the nice shiney inner look a mess. Brighton is the same, met a couple once who paid to have a large 2 berth cuddy on a pontoon even though it hadnt started in years, their excuse was its cheaper than a caravan and in the dead centre of Brighton for weekends away.

Doesn't Brighton have space though?

I couldn't agree more!!! You can tell by the amount of seagull crap which boats never move in Torquay Harbour, there are many!!

I also agree but I'd imagine that to a business if the fees are being paid then it makes no difference to them at all if the boat actually gets used or not!

I agree, on the Thames, you need a safety certificate on the vessel with a licence etc. yet Ive seen more than enough boats 'moored' that are barely afloat, granted some are on private moorings but it still raises the question of why etc?
