Argentinian incident

by Baasboat » 09 Aug 2015, 19:18

Time for a rant from me, apologies if it offends.

Was out yesterday, about 5 miles offshore, anchored and fishing, no other boats within a mile of me when over the horizon come three sailing dinghies (29ers) with their accompanying rib. They head straight for me, at speed, they keep going and going, at 100 m away two of them alter course and pass me about 50m away, the third continues on a direct course for my stern, he can clearly see me as i can see him, the sail is not blocking his line of sight if my stern, he turns at the very last second and clears my quarter with under 1 foot, he even lifts himself up in the his sling to clear the quarter, i look on in disbelief, the mrs nitices the argentinian flag on the sail, but i didnt get his sail number.
I express my displeasure, he ignores me and sails on, i haul anchor and approach the rib a few minutes later, the two chaps in the rib pretend not to speak english first, then say it was fine, then say i was in the wrong by getting in their way, at which point the mrs shouts out that we were anchored! At this point they become arm waving and pretend they dont speak english again, i ask for the sail number, and surprise surprise no speaky english.
So once back in harbour i went to the race office to talk to the person in charge, turns out its an international fleet in town for the week and crews were out practicing, the secretary (an American) was very pleasant and listened to my point of view, she explained that there were two Argentinian crews and in the words of an old friend and ex copper,, 'advice will be given' she ws most annoyed that as guests in the uk and at an international sailing event one of their crews had demonstrated poor sailing etiquette

I dont often have a rant but the dinghy crew were idiots, and their coach in the rib was a prize knob

Rant over
Anyway, caught loads of mackerel and a tope, so otherwise a good day out

It's times like these when some rubby dubby comes in very handy.

Oh and please don't worry about ranting, when it's justified like this one is post away.

Where's the navy when they're needed. A brisk shot across their bows from a passing gunboat would have done the trick :D

You only really need to worry about Argentinians coming straight for you if they look like this:
