Boat buying...puzzled about 350mag power

by Ianfs » 16 Jun 2015, 17:14

I've just been sent this add from Boatshed Poole, it says it has a 350 mag and has a top speed of 45knts but the HP is only 230. Now I thought the 350 Mags were all 300hp. Just did a search which confirmed the 350 at 300 so must be a typo! :?

It's an amazing top end for a 3.5 tonne 25' boat. Sealine 25's only seem to have KAD 32's fitted and 30knts. I know Matts please with his. Worth considering methinks guys?

Yep the 5.7 litre 350mag is 300hp whereas the 5.0litre is 260hp. I would say 45knots in the crownline is a little optimistic as Matt's seems to top out just under 40knots ( correct me if i'm wrong) but still very good for a 25footer. Crownlines are very nicely built with stainless fittings etc and have 4 berths so a nice weekender. The Sealine S25 is a very popular boat due to it having diesels making it economical and again are a nice weekender boat, but as you say misses the wow factor over the crownline. Also if i may say so they don't look as sporty as the crownlines but they do have better seakeeping due to it being british built.

Difficult to say which is a better as it really comes down to condition in the used market, but if i was to choose i would have a crownline because i'm a hooligan that loves a V8 8-). That crownline on boatshed has been for sale for a while so chance your luck and make a cheeky offer as it doesn't hurt to try?

That looks like a mix of specifications. The 5.7 is available in the 230 and 300 HP versions but only the 300 HP is the MAG version. 45knots is about where our 350 MAG will drive our boat to.

Thanks guys. I though you would know the answers.

Martin, I was reading that the 5.7 V8 small blocks (small block, that always brings a smile to my face) do a 230hp, so it could be a typo of the hp rather than the type. I think I'll make some enquiries.

James, I'm very torn between hell raising and sedate at the moment. I'm quite amazed at the economy of the 350 mag when cruising, not bad at all!

I think they're great looking boats with a really useable layout.
If I were looking in that price range they would definitely be the top contender.
However, isn't there already 2 of them on the forum, can we allow another, they'll take over..
+1 to the V8 James! :D (well, one that works anyway!)

Another strong contender below, but here's the thing, it's displacement is 2.7 tonnes against 3.5 for the Crownline, both with 350 Mags but the Monterey is rated at topping at 35knts and the Crownline at 45  . As you've said James, Matts reaches 40 ish and yours 45.

That Monterey will probably top out about the same as Matt's as its about the same size boat. I wouldn't trust boat sales sites on the speed of the vessel as they are just guessing based on experience but you won't truly know till you get out their and give it the beans for yourself. TBH i think 38knots is good for a sports cruiser and lets face it how often do you go that fast or get the conditions to go that fast?. On Sunday i spent the day cruising at about 22/25knots with blips to 30+knots occasionally which wasn't even pushing the boat to its limits , but then my mum wouldn't let me go any faster  .

Matt's Crownline is a beautiful boat as is Martin and James' but for me, given the choice/funds, I would go for a Sealine over any of the usual suspects (albeit, the U.S. boats are prettier) With the added benefit of diesel too (at the moment). The build quality just seems to be in a different league. I missed out on an older S260 when I bought the Bayliner a couple of years ago and I am still gutted to this day. Mind you, that had twin 3.0 not diesel. I think anything over 30knots in a sports cruiser is acceptable. Look forward to the updates.

I agree with everything you've said Mark....and with James, Stu and Martin. :D

I've tried a Sealine 23 and they are nice to handle. Trouble is, I've now been sent this and I said I would never buy an older boat ever again...yeah right!!

She's a '94 Sunseeker 32, owned by a guy in his 70's who hasn't got anyone to crew with him now. In 2006 he re-engine her with twin Yamaha me 422's 275hp each!

All nice boats but agree with the performance views above. We spend most of our time at 22 - 25 knots with only occasional blast at full chat. Knowing your Admiral Ian I suspect anything over cruise speed will be met with strong disapproval anyway so go for something that can cruise all day at 325 with reasonable economy and you'll be fine. 30 it nice to have and anything over that will be a rarely used indiugence, not to mention an expensive one
