Anchors.

Not sure if this is in the right forum so please move if not.........

Vonny's anchor is too light (Vonny is a 2010 Bayliner 175Gt )

the anchor is a 4 leg fold up type (pic below)



but it's too light , and I need something big/heavy enough to hold her steady (ish) when anchored ...

what have you guys got or recommend ??

I have a bruce pattern, I think 7Kg and a grapnel like that as a standbye, kedge.



I find this digs in and holds pretty well in the mud / sand that we have around here.

I recall it holding 4 boats rafted up on Sandown Bay the first time we went around the Island

+1 to Colin, exact same set up and same reserve
Had no problems works well.
On the last one I had a CQR type, which to be honest, seemed to be a little hit and miss sometimes as to whether it would hold first time.
I'd too recommend the Bruce.
They can be awkward to stow though if your tight for space?
Also, I think a few feet more of chain would also make a huge difference?

Carl, absolutely no problem, you put it in the right place.

I can back up Colins anchors holding ability, 4 boats rafted on one anchor and swinging..... amazing!

As Shibbs said though, you really need to have space for a Bruce type and either an anchor locker in the bow or a windlass/anchor stay, which is why they are used on bigger boats. Smaller bowriders have ski lockers and work better with a folding anchor.

Your Grapnel anchor would be great over rocky ground but not much good in sand with a tide running.

I would recommend a Danforth type and keep the Grapnel with you as well. The Danforth types have great holding ability in sand and mud and fold flat.

A decent amount of chain definitely makes a huge difference. Don't leave home without it!

What sort of weight would you guys go for ??

Not sure about anyone else but things I consider are, which type you are going to buy, how big is your locker and what weight can you lift comfortably when hauling in over the side so as you don't bash your hul.

For example, if you buy a Danforth type get the largest which will fit your locker if you decide on a Bruce type a 5 or 7 kg should be plenty.
