Brake service

by argonaut » 04 Jan 2015, 12:12

On the previous forum during a thread on servicing brakes, one member posted some pics where he had painted back plates black.
Anybody now on this forum want to own up ?
Interested how paint faired, and what it was.

Could give mine a painting at annual pre-season brake service.

Argo, I've had a good look and I think the only posts about painting trailer suspension was me.

I did mine a few years ago. My trailer is a lot older than yours and had taken a real pasting.

So I decided to experiment with what was supposed to be the right paints. First, primed with Hammerite Rust Killer.......

Then Hammerite Silver....

However I think it was you who advised a few years ago that Hammerite cured by evaporation, which meant that it shrank and would be prone to cracks and let in air, which in turn would cause oxidation.

Consequently, I stripped it all down 2 years ago and used a Resin 2 pack paint and have dunked it many times since without a problem.
Hope this helps.

I may be wrong but I seem to remember AndyB also doing it?
Think he left a while back though?

This was not the pics ... it was last year ( I think) pics showed gloss black paint on the backplates of the brake assemblies.

I did post that Hammerite is not good for trailers, Smoothrite is better ...but still not as good as acid etched primers then a 2-pack paint.

I've had another look but can't find anything.

However you may be interested that having completely cleaned all the bad paintwork and then de salted with X Salt, I painted the hubs and back plates as well as the suspension units with Epoxy Mastic, a 2 pack paint which cures by Chemical reaction rather than evaporation.

This was two years later after several dunkings in Salt water, but having been stripped and cleaned.

High Argonaut. Sadly we worked hard to try to get the information back to some sort of working forum after it had been attacked and very strangely some of the data base had been deleted. In short we cannot transfer the information.

Back to the Epoxy Mastic, its made by these guys and I'm told the RNLI use it on their Sea Tractors, but don't have any proof.

Pity about loss of data ... didn't you have any backups?

Only ask as I wrote up several launch sites & a couple of projects.

The old site was owned by CSL and still is. We did take back ups but didn't have access to the root directory until recently. However somehow the root directory was hacked and a lot of the database deleted maliciously.

Anyway I've learned a lot from it and now we have back ups every night without fail and a very secure future.

So post away, I won't let it happen again, Boat Banter is here to stay.
