Is it for the cockpit or cabin?

If it's for the cockpit I'd just get a 60 quid special from Halfords with a standard plug fitting because in all the years I have had boats stereos last 2 years before the salt and humidity destroys them when in the cockpit. You'll be surprised how bumpy a boat is when trying to adjust radio while on the move. Get one with big control buttons and USB input. Taking CD's to sea is a bad idea but burning them to USB stick works well

I put this one in. 50 quid. Plenty loud enough to be heard above two big diesel engines roaring at 3.4k rpm and 23 knts. Small buttons are a right PITA when scrolling, so is volume knob hence my advice. Sound quality actually rather good for the price. (I do have good speakers aboard) http://www.halfords.com/technology/car- ... car-stereo. I have a lovely Bose system inside the cabin, but it never gets used. C'est la vie

It's a bow rider .. so completely open. ..
I kind of like the idea of having a blue tooth system so I can stream music off my phone

We have a fusion which is good marine quality with Bluetooth Which is handy if your friends want to play music.

Fusion are excellent bits of kit, not cheap but in a marine environment, what is?

The Fusion do make nice kit and if that works for you then the prices are reasonable, or at least, until you want an integrated cd player or anything above basic AM/FM/Bluetooth. I don't listen to the radio so that element is no use to me and dont keep music on my mobile, not withstanding it drains the battery remarkably quickly and which I also dont keep in the cockpit for obvious (wet) reasons. Hence my preference for thumb drive/usb stick

If it's completely open then a car based unit will have a short life as water/damp will get to it. I bet all the boat surfaces are damp when you pull back the covers most days of the year

If the boat is damp pulling off the cover he has a bigger issue with the cover ventilation to be honest. That will cause rot quickly. Though I concur regards the car radio. If he places it where it can pick up spray and damp it will have a short life and had I known he was in a bow rider would not have been so quick to advance it. At a 1/10th the price though in most circumstances like for like I see no advantage in going Marine specific regards longevity vs performance

He could put it in the glove box, if it has one.
