Hi All,
I am going to have to get a vehicle when my Navara goes off hire in July, I am looking for a vehicle that can tow my Rinker 232 and be used as my daily work vehicle, whilst I would like a Range Rover Sport I dont think thats going to happen so I am looking at a New Merc GLC which has a braked towing capability of 2500kgs, has anyone towed with the Merc ? Not sure I can get them to let me have a test drive that involves towing the boat !
Any thoughts appreciated.
Thanks
Greg

I used to tow with a merc ML270. Whilst it pulled like it had nothing on the back, it drank fuel like it was going out of fashion!! One to consider, not sure how similar the engines are now, this was a 2001 model.
Nice car though.

I can mirror that on the ml270. mines the Sorrento which I believe is the 270 older style or there abouts. pulls my Karnic 2260 at 2.2T with ease on the auto box but it suffers big time on fuel loss. the newer Sorrento's have a a lower tow capacity so not sure how they handle bigger boats but may be worth a look. The trouble is (in my case) the auto box is not the best. Manual is a dead cert on the 'Never tow with it' category with the DMF clutch. The auto is a great car but add a load and she refuses to go into top gear unless you are in cruise control and even then she changes up & down constantly. As a result the fuel economy is dreadful, I did 1 1/2 full tanks each way from Peterborough to Torquay in August so she is on the for sale list when I get more money for something else.

Navarra - u are on a time limit to destruction on that one. having just sold a pathfinder it was a sad day to see it go but she HAD to go since there were so many bad reports from boat towers and marinas alike that she was a ticking time bomb. From stories of those affected the rear axles just cant handle the tow load - 2 separate marinas told me the same story that new Navarra's were going to auction after less than 2 years with rear axle and drive failures through towing (within Limits) .

The guy who bought the Pathfinder to tow horses, said he'd never buy another Disco 4 - biggest piece of rubbish going (his words) but the 4x4 dealer I went to said the same and he wouldnt stock them for that reason, great to drive lovely to look at - ticking time bob of mechanical problems if you tow.

So far the Only one I've yet to hear bad press on is the Grand cherokee, former forum member towed her fully laden at 3T (ish) to south France and back with no problems. That will be my next choice of tow car (or the Volvo but no info on that yet) for me the only problem is a job to pay for the new motor and next years boating fund. Fuel will go up on the perm 4x4 drive but a rock solid motor that will handle anything and as yet I haven't heard a bad thing about them. hope that helps .

ps. Im no 4x4 expert lol.

Hi Bugbird

Nice car the GLC but I think with a 2500kgs towing capacity you will be on the limit. Rinker is about 1900kgs, 5-600kgs with trailer and maybe a couple of hundred kgs of fuel/equipment etc.

I tow my 20ft Mariah bowrider with an R Class Mercedes-Benz 350. I believe it is built on the ML chassis although it seems the wheel Base might he longer. Personally I love it. We tow all the way to the Med each summer. Boot loaded, 4 passengers , kyack on roof . I think I average about 22 to the gallon. Have standard suspension, so that's self levelling air at the back springs at the front. 7 speed gearbox is impeccable. Hate the seats though. I would say it is equivalent to the GLE rather than GLC.
