Fairline Carrera 24 - Re Engined

by Dazlindazza » 30 Jul 2016, 21:06

Help need please.

I'm considering buying a Fairline Carrera 24 which has been re engined with two Volvo TAND 22 105hp engines.

I've been told by the vendor that the boat will do 20 plus knots, but someone I know is an outdrive engineer tells me that the engines are under powered for the boat and it will struggle to get on plane with these.

Is anyone able to provide any insight or opinion on this?

Many thanks

Hi Daryl

Welcome to our forum.

I looked at one of these new back in the late 80's, they're great boats and well built. This is a planning hull, the one I looked at had twin Volvo petrols, I cant remember what power but must have been around 280 ish I think as it was capable of 30knts.

It's a strange power to re engine this boat with, these are great river boats and replacing with something like twin 50hp's would make more sense for river cruising but wouldn't give the hull it's true potential in a similar way neither will the TAMD 22's IMHO.

If you want it to plane then consider the passenger and luggage load. A sales demo with no one on board may well be good but imagine a sunny day with all your friends on board and their picnic gear. You turn to them and say "watch this" whilst slamming the throttles forward and nothing happens.

However, if it's displacement cruising you are looking forward to then that's different.

i'm afraid your outdrive engineer is absolutely spot on....great boats but this one is severely underpowered for planing....possibly with a very very light driver and someone sat on the bow but unlikely to make it over the hump.......but as has been said, if its a displacement or river cruiser you are after....perfect..
