Fuel on the Solent after 5pm?

by Akeap » 26 Jul 2016, 11:14

Hi All

Now I am not trailering the boat and able to stop in the garage for fuel on the way to the slip. I thought I would be able to get fuel from Hythe Marina but it appears if I want to go out in the evening then this isn't possible as they close at 5pm?

Can anyone else recommend a place I might be able to go. Launching out from Drivers.

Your best bet is jerry cans from a local garage. The only other source of fuel on the water is Port Hamble and I think they close at 5:00 as well.

I agree. When we had our Fletcher at Southampton Dry Stack, we bought 4 20L jerry cans just for this, and used the Texaco(?) just around the corner. Bit of a pain, but we soon got used to it, and almost exclusively filled up this way as it was invariably cheaper than the Marina pumps.

Incidentally, if you're in need of 4 jerry cans in alright condition, previously used for petrol, I have them for sale (along with a slightly knackered 'Polarn' pump which makes filling up afloat really easy if your filler is above your deck level). No longer needed due to now owning a yacht with an inboard diesel at a rate of about 10l/year!

I'm using jerry cans too. Fill up before each trip and it's not too painful

I use jerry cans, and too fill up before each trip, well, I say fill up, I'm slowly losing the battle but it's better than filling at marina.
For info, Gosport marina now has a fuel point that is self service, I thought it was 24 hrs but have just looked and its still only open until 1745, its A fair trip over from Southampton though.

Heading tomorrow on a snorkeling trip. 45km each way. If they take their larger boat it has 3x 300HP on the back. Looking forward to see how many jerry cans they have :-)
