Boat Safety Scheme

by Ridgewoodwoody » 23 Dec 2014, 17:48

We own a 3 metre Brig Dingo inflatable with a Yamaha 6hp outboard. Next spring I'd like to take it onto the Thames. Reading the EA website, I'm not entirely clear whether or not our dinghy needs to be registered and therefore requires me to undergo the Boat Safety Scheme.
Any advice welcome, along with any particularly good Thames slipways or spots to cruise.

Many thanks.

Does the boat have a fixed or removable fuel tank? If removable then it does not count IIRC as an applicable boat under the scheme.

No fixed tank. We attach the outboard to the inflatables's transom each time.

Are you going to keep it on the Thames for a full year?

I suspect not.

If not keeping it for a year then go for a visitors licence purchased at the first lock you come to and "self declare" at the bottom of the licence form (You just sign that your boat is safe).

This is what we do with our boat (Was inboard engined bowrider and now inboard engined Sportsboat) which would need a BSS if kept on the Thames.

You can get a visitors licence for one day up to 30 days
