Extended Warranty

Be interested in views on Extended Warranty.
My Volvo Penta 4.3L 280 C-N
Comes with standard 2yr warranty.
I an eligible to 'buy' an extra 3 years giving 5 in total.
I thought it would be an obvious choice and would 'buy up' ... until the quote arrived.
It's a one-off payment of £2,156 ... a whopping £719 per year.
That a significant extra cost per year.

depends what is the feedback on your engine regards reliability issues in years 3-5
what exactly does the extended warranty cover and NOT cover?

what do you actually get for your £2156 ? does the service have to be carried out by an approved Volvo Penta agent and what are their costs?

if you not have the extended warranty would you self service ?

VP state it extends the yr 1&2 cover, providing full parts & labour for all engine & drive components.

Yes you have to use a VP dealer for annual service each year.

I would still continue to use a dealer for annual service, though winterising etc., I do myself.

Thinking that I may instead set up a £50 a month transfer to a savings account …. It’s a pot if work required, and a savings gain if it’s not.

I asked on VP forum, they all advised not to take it out …. as not good value.

I agree with Ian and I suspect this has crossed your mind as well. Although they cover parts and labour, no doubt that will be in case something breaks or fails, so the burning question would be how reliable is it likely to be?

Warranties and insurances play the same old game with our minds. For example, if a Gimbal bearing failed it could destroy the stern drive, gimbal housing and transom shield as well as some of the engine, in which case £2100 is not a great deal of money. I suspect the reason it is so expensive is because the "POT" from lack of uptake is small. There are millions of cars on the road with extended warranties at only a few hundred pounds, but probably only a handful of boats with a Volvo extended warranty.

For me the chances of a brand new engine that's serviced every year and which has done 2 seasons without issue is going to go on forever.
