He mentioned something about disconnecting a cathode


Possibly Eljay has a Mercathode fitted. It radiates a tiny current around the boat reversing any galvanic current, the stuff in sea water which eats away at your metal bits.
It only uses a small amount of juice, but I expect he's trying to work out through elimination what the problem could be.
