MDL Saxon Wharf OR Premier Swanwick

by ian h » 29 Jan 2020, 21:32

As per title.
Looking at mooring options for Hunton 36
Having been at Saxon Wharf for 10 years with MDL,

with the change in manager things are changing . a few unhappy berth holders I hear.

Looking at other options Premier Dry Stack at Swanwick Marina.
Similar travel times from home - similar cost,

Looked at Gosport but its another 10 miles and 20 minutes

Not keen on Trafalgar Wharf - too long a trip to Harbour entrance,

Anyone have good or bad views of MDL Vs Premier ?

Only other issue is boat is currently up for sale ,

Do you need the facilities of a Premier of MDL marina. If not, I used quayside marina on the Itchen last year. They are part of Southampton dry stack across the river. Basic facilities, but they have power on the pontoon, and the outer moorings have very good tidal access. Cheap as well.
The chaps running the place are also super helpful and friendly. I've moved across to the dry stack this year

Hi Ian
This is somewhat belated and may not be relevant any more due to personnel changes however:
We moved from Saxon to Swanwick in March 2015 when the Swanwick drystack first opened. It was a good deal for the first year, summer only lift and launch, way less than Saxon's newly inflated price, however that only lasted a year and was withdrawn and I had to go to full year lift and launch at a great increase in cost for no extra benefit, we rarely used the boat through the winter. Anyway we sold the boat in March 2017 just before contract renewal!!
Whilst there we thought the service was generally poor, they could have learned so much from Saxon from a dedicated mobile phone to a dedicated team. The Swanwick drystack was a poor cousin to the rest of the Marina and came a long way down the list in terms of priority. However that was 3 years ago, I don't know if they have improved, and Saxon appears to have gone downhill from your posting.
If and when you can I would talk to as many drystack customers as you can before committing.
Good luck

Thanks for taking the time to reply,

Swanwick did not work out for a couple of reasons - After filling in the online quote I received email quote back which was similar to Saxon Wharf, that was not the issue,

The online form asks for length of boat only. Not weight, So when I called to ask a few more questions before moving they happened to ask weight of boat,
As The Hunton weighs over 3000Kg that was too heavy - Secondally and more frustrating they also told me that they were full in the dry stack. What a waste of time filling in form and being given a quote,

Despite this I am moving the boat after 10 years at Saxon, I have found a dry stack that is 30% cheaper. Its Southampton Dry Stack next door :D

Once the lock down is over the boat will be moved. This year is not going to be good time to sell. Just going to hopefully enjoy having fun.

Glad you found somewhere and by the sounds of it, the move time and distance shouldn’t be too much hassle..
Agree with you on selling, guessing this probably won’t be the year for it.. I was Going to be looking to put mine up this year but doubt I’ll bother now, play it by ear and see what happens.
I wonder how many will end up being put be up for sale though for various reasons..

At SDS myself this year. Was across the river at their marina last year and so far have been very happy with the guys that run the place. It's all basic facilities, but that's all I need.
