Bimini - Not completly sure

by Bigplumbs » 09 Sep 2017, 15:34

As we are going to Fowey and putting Add2Cart in for a week at the end of September on the River/Sea I thought we might need some weather protection so bought and fitted this. Most people would fit them a bit more further forward but not possible on my boat because of the layout and location of the screen.

We also have a big brolly (2 m) so if it rains and comes from one direction we can stick the brolly through the appropriate hole and open it. Will look a bit silly but will enable us to go out if the weather looks a bit changeable or indeed pants.

The whole thing folds back at 45 degrees and folds into a special boot for neatness. It will also completely come off by unscrewing 4 thumb turns and can either store in the shed or by removing 6 push in pop tubes I recon I can get it all in the Ski locker.

I have been looking and measuring for about 2 years and this one was only £120 so decided to go for it.

The height is a bit high but it is as it came and also so I can stand up

Not completely sure if I like it but it can be removed and all you have left is 4 small fittings and 2 small stainless D rings

Had to drill 12 holes in the boat however, Didn't like doing that

What do you think

Not bad for £120 Dennis it should do what it says on the tin but it does look like you have mounted it backwards? At least, that is when I compare it to my bimini canopy. Not sure if that creates a problem at speed or not. Goodluck on your trip, hope the weather gods are kind.

Bruce

I know what you mean but it is the correct way. It even has front marked on the cover. Also attached is a pic of it folded up which it can only do one way. So it is correct. I think it will mainly be used when the weather turns bad so it is very unlikely to be ever used at speed open.

Now going to get some thick clear vinyl to try and make a front and sides. Just trying to ensure that I don't drag the boat all the way to Cornwall from Suffolk to find the weather stops us

I think it looks great Dennis and thinking positively, it'll be a great sunshade. :D

That's a fair drive though, must be what about 5 1/2hrs ish? It got me thinking though, back to my airport days and the adage it's quicker by air and y'know, sometimes it's not. Obviously you cant fly your boat down there but if you were to go without it, would it be quicker to fly?

Say you had a 1 hour drive to Stanstead, arrived 1 hr 30 mins ahead for check in and gate call, flight time 1hr 15mins (without delays, quite common with Flybe) then there's push back, taxi and wait for heavies to land etc. 20mins, landing to terminal 15mins, 30mins baggage wait, 30mins to get you hire car and then a 50min drive to Fowey. That's 6hrs and 10mins.

Back to topic, as said it looks great, nice install.

Yes often flying is not the quickest.

I was pleasantly surprised at the quality for the price. I suspect just a replacement cover will be more when it comes to it. They do them in several different sizes

For replacement take the framework to a canvas specialist.

I think that looks spot on, can't argue with that price either!
Definitely on my list for next year.
With you on drilling holes in the boat though.. definitely won't look forward to that!! :?

Looks ok to me too. Bit further back than mine but you said that was intentional. Image
