Annual cruise

by BruceK » 14 Aug 2017, 14:09

Hold thumbs the weather is not too shabby from the 18th to the 4th. We're off again on our annual holiday cruise beach hopping our way south in search of our own slice of paradise. 17 days afloat, hope the kids survive it , or me survive them, because they have 50GB of broadband left on the boat and that wont last 17 days without rationing it

early forecasts show we'll be starting out in Force 8's for the first 3 days. It's going to be fun and dandy

Is that via satellite or something similar?

No 4G router. You'll be amazed at just how good the signal is out to sea for the first 20 offshore miles or so. Knocks the socks off anything land based. I presume this is because it's clear line of sight. Got it originally to stream movies etc to the boat because tv can be flakey but the kids have taken to online gaming and abusing the U-tube

Considering I on the hilltop overlooking Colwyn Bay get my mobile coverage from Isle of Mann which is 80 plus miles away, I recon if I raise the antennae I might get 30- 40 miles to a 4G mast

Have a good one Bruce. Good luck with the weather (Although if you're starting off in F8's it can only get better.......).

The forecast is fickle it's now down to the 1st and half of the 2nd day. Thats Ok. I can tuck behind the island for the first night and weather it out. I bought a drogue this time to try and stop the 30 metre oscillations I was having in similar weather last year while at anchor so I can get a good night's sleep and not have the anchor alarm go off every 2 minutes

You guys arent holding thumbs. Its now 5 days of F7 to 8 gust with a 2m 5 second period head sea. 5 days of it mind and maybe more because its all the forecast gives. It may not be fun but it'll be a bloody adventure alright. Ah well. Brit weather. Will have to weather it between safe anchorages and avoid the bars and sounds during the worst of it.

Just sodding bad luck but at least we're out and not at work

It took having to go through a few of them to realise Amanzi can take them in her stride (yes they pitch and roll but it's ok) and it's exhilarating to watch her cut through a wave instead if climb it and terrifying when there is a hole behind :o . The crux of it is not making way but finding good safe anchorage after making way. That will take a bit of planning and a keen eye on what the wind and waves are going to be doing. It's if the sea become confused is when it becomes nasty so the days when the wind changes I will be firmly on the hook in a sheltered bay.
