Motor Boat Forum

Reintroduction

by kwil » 10 May 2017, 15:49

Hello All
I have not posted on here for a few years, it may even have been the old forum. I used to have a RIB and post about trips around Morecambe bay and the Irish Sea. Well I retired and did not seem to have time to look at forums, too busy dragging the RIB to far flung parts of the country and sailing on charter boats in foreign countries.
But after a couple of years of launching and recovering on strange slips, looking for accommodation and every trip having to return to the same place we set off from because of that was where our evening bed was, we thought we would upgrade. So last year we bought a Sealine S24 and spent the second half of the summer making our way back to our home port of Fleetwood for the winter.
Well it is now serviced anti fouled and cleaned ready for us to continue our journey north to the Western Isles for the Summer. No definite plans but that is the beauty of retirement.
I must get some photos taken as I cannot find any of the whole boat!

Keith!!!

How the hell are you? Long time no see! I'm still working at the same place, despite the best efforts of the various funding bodies to merge us out of existance! :)

Nice to see you back!

Hi Nick
I am very well and glad to be out of the politics of education. We loved the RIB but missed being able to spend the night in secluded anchorages with just the wild life. Plus I am not getting any younger and trailers and winching boats on and off just seemed like hard work.
When this S24 came up, virtually as new with only 120 hours and no expense spared, we thought we would give it a go.
I kept the RIB at first but sold it last month as I had hardly used it. It was bought to do a round Britain run by a couple of East coast R.N.L.I guys.
Give my best to Frannie and anyone else that may be still there that I know.
Keith

Hi Dennis

It is the KAD32 version, a petrol version would be very hardwork refuelling in the areas we like to cruise and the KAD version has a much greater range. We looked at the 23/25 but the cockpit and boarding platform layout of the 24 works better for us as we mainly sail 2 up.

Welcome back. I must say, your cruising sounds idyllic. We still are constrained the the weekend rush. Mind you, when I retire I will probably go to the dark side and go all raggie and native.

We considered going back to the flapping tackle but I have a back injury which limits my movement. I still do a bit of the rags and sticks but only in small chunks, on friends boats.
So for us the shorter transit times and more time relaxing after the passage works, especially as we do some long distances to get to new cruising grounds.

Long distance to new cruising grounds sounds very interesting, and is something that we hope to build up to over the next couple of years. I would be interested to hear about your do's/dont's and experiences.

Do's /dont's and experiences, I am not sure were to start, you have to remember I was born virtually on the beach and been messing with boats since the 50's. So anything beyond a compass is luxury.
But I digress the secret to a good passage is simple, good boat preparation and thorough passage planning.
If you want experiences then that would take a few pints of the amber nectar to awaken the grey cells.

Tis true but every time I make plans the weather or other circumstances put the kibosh on it. I've found just going where the weather isn't gives me more time out rather than planning everything to the nth degree. Mind you we have Anglesey and the Llyn to hide around and about to stay out of the worst of it and when all else fails there is the Menai. Our last 14 day cruise was more about doging weather and ending up in Aberdovey than making Ireland
