You could buy this and throw away the boat and keep the engine

Well that is a very good idea. If you offer £2500 I bet you will get it then sell the boat and trailer (Which looks good) for £500 and someone can put a sensible engine on it and have a nice little river boat

Yam 150 are very good engines

Thanks for the link Martin,

it may be a bit too much for the Fletcher as 135hp is the max recommended although it is probably a lighter engine .

It's also 2 stroke and I was trying to avoid them...

However, the fuel costs vs capital costs of a new 140 4 stroke probably mean that the 2 stroke is more cost effective.

Assuming my MPG will fall to 1.7 mpg (1/3rd of current of 5 MPG on 75 Merc 4 stroke), then this will probably be around £1,500 a year. My mooring fees are higher than that any way.

Hmm I may have a look!

Look forward to seeing some forum members at Brixham next year - the 2016 rally was great!

I would not worry about that extra 15 hp she will cope with that easily. I honestly think that Yam might be a very good idea

Hi Dennis,

I'm sitting right on the fence post at the moment. Have had problems with the current engine and am trying to sort this out with the boat on the mooring which is difficult. Trailer currently has a 6.5m rib hull on it so I can't easily get boat home to work on it....

London boat show is looming and if I can get a good deal on a suzuki 140 them I am tempted. Either way I will need to fix the 75 to get some cash to go towards the new engine otherwise it is spares/scrap value only!

I know I will fix the engine - it will be something simple in the end I expect. When this is done it may fetch £2500 ish on a good day which will go some way to funding the £9.5k fitted price for the new engine.

Mind you, it will go like stink with it on and I could reasonably expect 5 years of trouble free boating plus there will be a slightly higher resale on the boat.

Working on the principle that I actually enjoy boating rather than fixing them it seems a logical step to make....

I have looked a other cuddies but I do want an outboard and there aren't too many around the 19-20ft range.

Saver make a 5.8 m cuddy and there is one for sale at the moment but the engine has 450 hrs on it which is the same as my current one.

Was looking at a fletcher malibu 19 - they only made 2 in the end and the example I saw had a 150 yam on the back - essentially is is a 19 GTO hull and a different superstructure moulding. BUT it is a bow rider and in the Solent I have scooped water over the cuddy many times so not really an option.

Are you going to the boat show? (or anyone else?)

Just to add as above, 140 hp really won't stress that hull at all, don't worry about that.

I may have missed it, but what's wrong with the old engine?

Hi chaps,

Just been to LBS and visited all the outboard dealers with a view to buying a 115 engine.

Both Yamaha and Honda are coming it at a similar price so the deciding factor is technical, warranty and weight.

Honda is 217 kg which is 34 kg more than current motor. Displacement is a whopping 500cc more than the yam - 2.3 litres vs 1.8.

Honda also have a 6 yr warranty and appear to honour it based on various forums comments.

I favour the Honda with its bigger lazier engine but will the transom handle it?

Your comments will be appreciated, thanks

Nick

If you are going to spend the sort of money a Honda 115 will cost you Cant you go a bit bigger HP for the same weight. The cost of a new 115 scares me.

My 115 on my 17 foot bow rider is just right and goes very well but I would want a little more in the 19 foot sports cruiser if I were buying new.
