Windy Weekends not going to Gosport P1 Powerboats

Anyone go to this or planning on it?
I was going to but then the wind today is rediculous Tomorrow looks pretty miserable too typically.

Can't believe how windy it has been for what seems like every sunny weekend, or is it just me? Seems every time i want to go out or do venture out, its blowing straight down the Solent making it seriously choppy! Rant over..

No no, Shibbs its not only you. I was planning on getting the little Sea Ray out again this weekend and had some friends and son & girlfriend ready on stand by. Then I saw 30mph gusts and thought nah, it isn't going to happen.

Rubbish year this year. Lovely weather during the week and windy at the weekend. Persistent drizzle at the moment

Yep - I believe there is a thread over on YBW's mobo forum about the same.

Never ones to shy away from a bit (lot) of a wet/windy/scary ride we ventured out from the Itchen to Cowes yesterday at abut 15:00. It was howling, with waves to match! Just as we passed bramble bank, we had a Sealine S450 overtake us very close by (about 20m off our pot side) at est. 30kts when the maximum we could achieve was about 5kt due to the conditions! They were all sitting around in the cockpit drinking wine - so I guess the conditions were pretty benign for them! The confused water left by their wake was 'interesting' and the OH who was driving at the time had a few choice words for the S450 for passing so needlessly close!

Can't have been that bad though - as we were out playing on our SUP board in Osborne Bay for a couple of hours at about 16:30 - with surprisingly little in the way of falling in!

Would have loved to venture over to catch a glimpse of the P1s but I don't have any wet weather gear that is dry after yesterday - and have a feeling it'd have been needed... even more so than yesterday!

I fully agree about the wind. My other hobby is Radio controlled planes and I have had very little decent weather so far this year to fly either.

I am looking like others at 22 - 24 foot sports cruisers and wondering how this size of boat handles the chop compared to my 17 foot fletcher

The extra weight is the key. Stepping up from the 17ft bowrider to our current Monterey was a huge difference. Another 3 ft and even more weight would be a similar step.

One thing not to forget though is the greater windage of the larger boat which adds new fun when in tight spaces.

I remember chartering a brand new 43' yacht (bareboat) in Coatia and thinking what a "huge" ship she was. A skipper from a crewed chartered boat, refused to leave the dock in a similar sized boat due to the strong winds. Being a Maverick (and with 5 other experienced sailing mates), we went out regardless and without any reefing. That 43 footer with a deep fin keel, soon felt like a toy at the mercy of the sea and we soon pulled a couple of reefs in the main and Genoa. Moral to the story is, a boat may look big on your trailer/drive/pontoon but put it in hectares of water and boy do you feel insignificant.

I too am debating several trade ups for next year.

A big RIB
A sports cruiser
A trailerable cuddy

Each have their own pros and cons and I keep swaying from one to the other.

Personally Colin, that S24 would win for me.
