I agree with your conclusion, and think it's a matter of personal choice. My personal choice will be to tilt out and support with a wooden block (Unless their is some built in support on the outboard. I didn't notice anything yesterday, but wasn't really looking for it).

Our outboards at work are kept up when not in use, once up a chock twists into place prior to tilting down a touch to take the load off the hydraulics as already said.
Given the option, if it were mine, I think I'd always go with getting as much out of the water as possible, just to stop growth if nothing else..

OK so there you all have it from a member of the Royal Navy. Therefore, if it's good enough for the best Naval Force in the World, to have the Outboards out of the water, then it should be good enough for you! :D
