Hi all
Cornwall Live - Susie Goodall 3hrs ago
I'm not sure how many of you are following the Golden Globe round the world race but for those of you who may not know it, it is a race for skippers with 8,000 nms under their belts plus 2,000 solo. Yachts must be between 32-36' designed before 1988 and must be fibreglass. No modern electronic devices can be used for navigation apart from a Sat Phone and Sat text unit to keep in touch, oh and they can have a wind vane for self steering!
They've been sailing since the 1st July this year and out of the 18 starters there were only 8 left. Susie (from Falmouth) is the youngest competitor at 29 and was currently 4th. On Wednesday at 1100 GMT her yacht was caught in a nasty confused low pressure, with storm force winds, her boat did a pitch pole (went end over end) and was dismasted. She banged her head and suffered a few bruises. Spinnaker poles can be used as an emergency rig but hers was lost overboard, luckily the life raft remained secured.
A cargo ship was alerted and changed course for her and was due to be with her at 0500 GMT this morning, but I haven't seen any updates. Her last report mentioned it was calmer but still 5m waves.
Lets hope she is safe now and if anyone has heard she is OK, please let us know.
