Trailer and Tow Vehicle Forum

There's always something

by mark101 » 28 Jun 2015, 07:17

Made it to Salcombe in record time yesterday even managing a couple of hours on the boat before getting the keys to our rental property. All to the detriment of the trailer. Typically, twin axles and both hubs have worked properly loose on one side :-( the wheel nuts are all tight but I can physically move each wheel a goof couple of inches on their axis.

Not sure what to do but I have a week to sort it. Is it likely to be the main nut working loose inside the hub?

Anyway, here's some pics.ImageImageImage

I was driving this for the last two weeks at work, which probably explains why/how I was able to tow my boat so "enthusiastically." The trailer didn't make a single unusual sound until reversing down the slipway!

Mark, sounds like wheel bearings to me. You could check the tightness of the main hub nut but they should have split pins fitted to stop them loosening so I suspect the bearings.
It's an easy job to do but on the flip side can also be a real pain in the back side if the brake shoes / hub don't want to come off.
I would certainly recommend getting them looked at before you put the boat back on it.
If the bearings give up completely the wheel and hub will come off - nearly been there myself and not a good place to be on a motorway! :o
Is it something you would attempt yourself? If so I'm sure between us on here we can talk you through it?

Hi Shibbs. Firstly, I have no tools (apart from basic set on boat) with me and secondly, I'm hopeless even when I have!

I do employ several engineers, so I think I might lure one of them down to Salcombe.

Other than that, might just buy a new trailer (although that might be a tad extreme).

I will keep you advised but thanks for the heads up.

First of all, which make and type is your trailer?
Should be a fairly easy fix to talk you through. You may have to buy a socket set and possible a breaker bar.
Do you have bearing savers fitted?

Hi Ian

Please can you ask me a question about Cherry Pickers (I.e, something I know about)

To be honest, I don't remember the trailer make and I have no idea what a bearing saver looks like.

On a positive note, my engineer Simon (ex marine engineer) said he would be delighted to pop down and fix it. No idea what bearings I will need until he sends me on an errand with a pattern.

Might get him to change the brake shoes and adjust whilst he is here.

I am useless at this stuff and I really ought to learn because it seems to be an easy fix from what you all say.

Thanks for the offer both, I will take some pics and let you know how we get on.

Bit dull today but rest of week looking good. Go pro is poised for action!

Hey, thanks Martin. Your post came through whilst I was mid reply to Ian. I will certainly pop there for the spares once Simon diagnoses the correct bits.

Good news Mark.

If Western Towing are near you, you're sorted. I've just got a few things from them, they will undoudtedly have the bearings and if not most of them are pretty standard so doubt it will be an issue.

I think it may just be adjustment though.

Hi Mark,

Western Towing in NA are 10 minutes from me, and Salcombe is about 30 mins, AND I have tool kits and socket sets for every occasion.

If you get stuck and need any help let me know
