Engine hatch repair ?

by argonaut » 06 Aug 2016, 16:51

My 194FS … has a problem.
Opened the engine cover today after a great morning out ... and it came right off the hinge.

It appears that there must have been some form of threaded insert set into the lid (wood ?) and they are no longer there ….
The hinge came right off … and there are no threaded portions in any of the holes in the lid … screws will not grip.
There appears to be a lot of ‘rust’.. though there should not be anything ferrous there (unless it was the inserts ?) if they were plain steel , poor choice as SS machine screws going into them.

Sort of assuming there should have been something like these:

The next part is how to repair ...... thinking of getting some new threaded inserts (stainless if possible) and drilling out fixing hole to allow me to fit new inserts in with some West Systems epoxy ?

Any body got any other suggestion .... or know where i can get that type of insert?

They probably were stainless but suffered from crevice corrosion.

Used those on internal jobs .. but they are electro plated (not even hot dip galv)- no good for marine use ... unless someone knows of a stainless version.

Giving it a day or 2 to dry fully, then I will take off the vinyl and take a look at what has gone wrong .......... pretty disappointed in quality on this.
Tried to ask on Monterey forum ... but as usual anything that has any form of negative issue gets blocked by moderator (all posts moderated by Monterey staff)

I should have been more specific and said ......this sort of thing tends to be used and not necessarily the one's in the link. 4 prong T nuts in a marine material like stainless or galvanised. However if they have disappeared.....who knows eh, could have been an inferior batch?

Bad form, if they are blocking, strikes me that they have something to hide. I've always thought Monterey as a leader in their class, well built and up there with Cobalt etc.

I had a question about incorrect wiring schematic ... posted it 4 times - and it never got onto forum (all posts have to be passed by moderator)

I went to Monterey facebook page and asked could they make forum posts allowable without approval (they could of course still delete any flames) the response was Monterey wish to keep full editorial control of the forum.

A pity ... and backwards thinking by Monterey.

The Regal forum is the same although not run by Regal. They don't necessarily delete posts that are negative but they seem to have little time for anything non USA. They have blocked out most pacific rim countries because "that's where most forum spam comes from" and therefore have cut off Australia and new Zealand. They cut off the uk for weeks on end if any spam comes from an IP address block in Europe. They delete pictures of my boat as it has smart tabs fitted which they don't like, even if the picture is of something else and you can see a glimpse of smart tab in the picture.

youre not alone, Karnic are very similar in their disappointing build quality, apart from mechanical issues I have deliberately ignored the deck work quite frankly stinks. Im talking stainless screws into exposed ply in areas where water is evident and present and it has rotted to dust. My engine hatch has also given way but that is thin SS screws through fibre glass that simply shock themselves to death with a 1 sided gas strut and an equal lifting pressure/angle. the bases of all cushions are soaked in salt water but mounted on ply and as a result pooling brown sticky water evrywwhere and a cabin lining bleeding brown goo from deck mounts leaking water over the ply lingin. very poorly thought through quality and I'll be interested at SBS to see the new boats and if they have learnt from experiance.

For those that might be interested ....

This is what underside should look like (temp refit of hinge)

Image

Removed the vinyl and backing breather membrane ... and was surprised to find layer of plastic ... presumably to keep water out ... but also stops water that is in there from draining away ...

Image

Then peeled back foam to find that all that remain of T-Nuts is a wafer thin piece of rust - stuck to foam, not the wood.

Image

At least the wood looks fine - so good quality marine ply :

Image

So way forward is to source some stainless T-Nuts .. next size up so not loose in the hole (8mm) fit them, and then re-assemble.
Not sure what to do about the plastic. (any thoughts ?)

Then refit the vinyl.

I would have thought that a cover that is going to get wet ... designed for bathing ... should have made allowance for air vents or similar in the cover to allow damp air (water) to escape.
