Performance and Power

by Bigplumbs » 04 Oct 2015, 16:03

So my next probably stupid question:

My 17 ft Fletcher Bow rider with 115 hp Merc 4 cylinder 2 stroke outboard performs very well as far as I am concerned and will hit about 38 Knots with 2 up

IS Inboard 4 stroke power comparable or is there a difference in performance. ie a 3 ltr Mercruiser is about 135hp so is this comparable with a 135 outboard.

I know about hulls etc but on the same boat would a 135 hp Inboard give the same performance as a 135 outboard.

I am asking because if I go inboard on my next boat (Probably 3ltr) should I expect similar punch as my 115 hp outboard.

Bottom line is I want to buy that Bayliner I showed in my other thread

I've never had a large (bigger than a dory) boat fitted with an outboard, so have no personal experience here. However, I have been told that with two like-for-like boats, the one with a sterndrive will likely have a slightly higher top speed and use somewhat less fuel than an outboard powered equivalent BUT a two-stroke will likely have more punch in terms of acceleration.

Another point regarding performance - each 10hp extra will only gain you about 1mph in top speed but will noticeably improve out-of-the-hole acceleration.

Whatever you buy, though, try to get a sea trial first to be sure that you are happy with the boat's all-round performance.

I don't know what an outboard boat would produce but our old Bayliner 185 with 3.0litre topped out at 38knots lightly loaded.

I will indeed go for the sea trial if possible. Here is my Fletcher out yesterday. This was not flat out and was at about 30 knots off Felixstowe

Now that is shifting. What is the Boat and the engine size. We might get some more Whoo Hoo days if we are lucky

Try lifting the Tabs for a flat-out run... you'll get 45.0 knots @ 5,000rpm!

Lightly loaded and you might get 46.5 @ 5,120rpm - without the wakeboard tower, heater, water tank etc and it's over another knot on top of that too!

I should add that we didn't have any Sterndrive trim on during that photo. We tried some trim afterwards which got it up to 45knots, however Studland bay becomes very small at that speed.
