Boatless

by ChrisH » 06 Apr 2018, 14:31

Well - it seems I am now boatless. Sale finalised today.
The Mariah has been a lot of fun, and some great trips to Spain and France over the last few years. But my towing days through Europe are done now. Having towed caravans and boats for the last 15 years or so through Europe, the draw of packing a suitcase and jumping on a plane has become more enticing (for now anyway :D )

The Mariah was a fantastic boat for our holidays, and a big compromise for the rest of the season on the South coast, so time to change to something perhaps more in keeping with our weather and sea conditions. Just not 100% decided what I really want, and not much out there in my price bracket right now.

Some boats I am thinking about.
Sealine S240 - they are coming in a little bit pricey for me, especially the diesels
Sealine S230 - might be a good compromise if the hull is as good as the 240.
Sealine 255 - Really like the look of these if can find a good single engine version in reasonable nick
Wellcraft 2400 - love the cockpit layout
Windy 7800 - love the retro look of these, but not sure I want a cuddy, has no fridge and 30 years old- There is a lovely looking example for sale at the moment

Needs... better seakeeping ability than the Mariah, I don't want to be thinking about heading back in or not going out in an F3
Good socialising layout in the cockpit for when at Anchor or moored up in the IOW .
Sea toilet
Fridge and the means of boiling a kettle.
My son might stay over on the boat with his friends from time to time. Not convinced I will, although if it was not a cuddy I might be tempted for a night in Yarmouth or Bembridge.
Nothing too heavy fuel and maintenance wise. My 20ft Mariah has a 4.3 mercruiser. Ok to go a bit more Juicy on the fuel but nothing too crazy.

Any suggestions/ recommendations ideas gratefully received.
Budget approx 15k

I’ve got to say your list was quite similar to what I was after when I upgraded to my current.
I was swung by the fact that I’d already had a Draco and knew what great build quality and sea keeping they have.
Finally, was the layout, as you are after, plenty of socialising area, cooker, albeit small with small sink but useable, fridge in cockpit and enough room to comfortably sleep on. And a separate compartment for sea toilet.
The hull is almost an exact copy of the Windy 7800, although in my opinion, has a far better layout giving much more space, both inside and out.
I think the sealines are well thought out boats but they do seem to hold a high price tag, as for sea keeping I can’t comment as have no first hand experience.
Your welcome to come take a look if ever it suits.
Good luck with the search, hope you don’t lose out on too much of the season.

Chris

As you know I have just bought a sealine S24 with the Volvo KAD32 Diesel. This is a similar upgrade for us as you are looking at from our Fletcher SC19 with Mercruiser 3 LTR (But of course I still have that boat as well - Cant sell my babies)

The difference from a cuddy to a proper cabin with proper toilet, Fridge, Sleeping, Hot and cold water, Two burner hob and grill, TV, Shore Power is as they say night and day in difference. I also fully expect the KAD 32 on that pink diesel to be more cost efficient than the 3 ltr petrol.

There are still several of these around for £20K asking but not sure of your budget.

As you know mine is on the Norfolk Broads at Present and you would be very welcome to come along and have a look over her. Only problem is that I am about 1 hour from where we can put her up on the plane.

We are very pleased with our purchase and she seems well built and solid

Yes that’s the model. Only mine doesn’t have the blue hull :o
And mine has the V8 as opposed to diesel. Ignore the hull colour ( unless obviously that’s your thing) and I think that is a pretty strong price.
I’m down in Portsmouth, boat just by Port Solent at present have pre season preps. Hopefully putting back in later next week.

It seems the blue hull is vinyl wrap. Could be good. But then what is it covering up. I'm coming down to Portsmouth tomorrow to pick up my daughter. Will pm you incase there is a possibility to pop by and have a look. Chris

Chris

Yes with a Budget of £15 k you will struggle to get the Diesel Version. The petrol is just as good in boat terms but will be more costly to run (I think).

If you can stretch your £15K a bit more you might get one. I actually paid £18.5k but there are other costs that mount up as with any boat.

Off to see the Draco and Sealine 240 in the IOW this weekend. Good chance to compare large cuddy with cabin to see what I prefer. Mrs Chillee actually coming too for a look.
