Motor Boat Forum

Experience Required

by del936 » 27 Sep 2017, 11:25

Hi All,

I am looking to gain as much experience crewing as possible on motor boats as looking to do part of the year live aboard from 2019. I have owned a couple of small boats in the past, both single screw and the last was moored at Cobbs Quay, Hamworthy.

The bigger the boat the better and ideally with flybridge but will look at any offers. Happy to assist with cleaning down at the end of the day etc. as well as any advise and guidance re owning and managing your own boat. Currently doing day-skipper theory although have some experience for previous boats and looking to do practical next year. Can tie off a cleat, coil ropes, put out and adjust fenders and so quite a bit of the basics

Friendly, great sense of humour, ex-forces and ex-police, reliable and trustworthy.

Cheers,

Del

Hi del

Welcome to the forum.

Which boats did you own, size and type of engine and for how long.?

I think day skipper theory is a great place to start, although if you are going to live aboard and do some coastal work Coastal Skipper maybe a better choice, who are you doing it with?

Hi Ianfs,

Thanks for the welcome.

I had a Bayliner 20' on a trailer followed by a Regal Commodore 25" moored at Cobbs Quay. I seem to recall that it had a 2.5l Mercruiser. That was around the early 2000's. We also intend to have 2-3 days own boat tuition as soon as we get the boat. I hired a boat put in Florida, Gulf Coat a couple of years ago and it was just like riding a bike. These are all considerably different than the boat we are looking to buy. Most likely around the 40' size with flybridge, Princess, Fairline, Azimut, Beneteau, Cranchi.

I did run a sideline charter company when I had the Regal and was lucky enough to go on a Targa 34' and a Princess 50' and an old Princess 40' few times.

I am doing the theory on line but not that impressed. I tend to supplement the study with some You Tube videos to make sure I have understood. From a practical perspective I can do most of the basic crewing including making Tea although preferably not when doing 20kts :-)

What sort of boat do you have I assume it is in the UK?
