Metal polishing

by Warpa » 07 Jun 2017, 16:18

Ok so it's not a prop but I thought I would try my hand at metal polishing instead of gel.
Subject for this was my work hammer, could make a stainless prop look like a mirror.

Ian,

We use Bracknell Metal Polishers which is not too far from you.

It took maybe a couple of hours using an angle grinder. Flappy discs to take out the imperfections, fine grinder and a polishing wheel.
No metal polish involved.

Martin how much did they charge you to do a prop?
Ian I'm sure we could sort something out :)

First time was £30 per prop (duo-prop so £60). This is the change shown in the picture.

Subsequent annual clean was £20 per prop (ie. £40).

Martin,
That is amazing finish. apart from the "Bling" factor does it actually add any speed or does it reduce ?

Probably only in my mind!

Clearly a really fouled prop will affect performance but whilst ours originally was heavily coated on the surface, it was only the surface.

However now they are polished they seem to be self-cleaning (I guess the surface is too smooth for things to attach to it). We didnt even need a polish at all at the start of this season.
