Fuel cost for a day

by Bigplumbs » 25 May 2017, 06:54

Much is discussed on various forums about fuel consumption of various engines but I have come to the conclusion that don't tell you much. In fact it just scares most people with a modest Budget.

Today me and her indoors had a nice day out in our small sports Cruiser (Fletcher 19 GTS with 3.0 ltr Mercruiser) We left our mooring at about 08.30 and did a fast run from Felixstowe ferry to the River Ore and then a slow run to Orford. We then returned against the tide to the mouth of the ore and did a further fast run back to the Deben. We then pootled to the waldingfield Maybush for lunch before pootleing back to our mooring at Felixstowe ferry. At the end of the day I filled up with petrol from our 10 ltr cans with a jiggle syphon (Best device known to man in my view).

The total cost of petrol was £50, and I travelled 45 nm half at 22 knots and the rest at about 5 knots

Without over complicating things I was wondering what each of you spend on fuel for a typical day out and on what boat

Dennis

Looks like you had a brilliant day out Dennis!

I did some research into fuel costs when looking to upgrade to my current boat, but to be honest now that I own the boat I don't think about the cost of fuel.

My thought process is........I own a boat, I am on the boat most weekends and all holidays, I put diesel in when required..........

I know that is a good attitude but I was made redundant at 54 and want to try and eek out what I have with only doing part time work. Also I want to use data like this to inform my next and most likely final boat purchase (25 ft is sports cruiser). I recon if I get one with a KAD 32 I can use Red diesel at £0.65 per ltr and have days out like the one yesterday at similar cost.

Any KAD 32 boaters have any day out costs ?

Hi Dennis, without really going into the maths I do not much more than that in £ running 2 x 3 litre diesels in a 35 foot boat. KAD 42's. About 30l per hour at those speeds.

2.5 hours to do 50 Nm at 76p per litre on a 60/40 split . 30 x 2.5 x 0.76 = £57

Crikey that is CHEAP diesel. We're on 90p/litre with 60/40 split & bertholder discount!

Dennis where do you find red at 65p/litre? I assume this is using jerry cans to fill?

On our Monterey I would work on approx £50 per day for a standard day out. Worth every penny.

For a full blown ringoing day it would be quite a bit more and for the round the Isle of Wight trip I think we used up about £80 - £90 ish.

To be honest I just kept filling up and then promptly burning it off with no thought for a budget. It's all about value for money.

Compare it with a trip to Legoland or similar and it all looks well worth the money :D :D

£85 to fill up the Land Rover, £50 or so in the boat, stop at the shop for sausage rolls £5 ish, £25 launch and recover.

£165.

Definitely something to be said for a mooring or dry stack. :D

I go to the thieving stewards at the marina. It's about the only thing they sell cheaply but that's because of the competition and the fact they can store huge volumes of it so can buy / transport it in much lower than the council owned diddy fuel pontoon which costs more in the region of 88 - 90p for the same. At least when I accosted the harbour office over the price discrepancy that was their excuse. For winter warm on a heating buy I paid 42p a litre

Yes Cans but I find the 10 ltr (which actually hold about 11 + ltr) plastic ones which are black with a yellow top to be very good. Ebay does them. I fill up 4 at a time with petrol so about 45 ltrs. Then fill away with my jiggle syphon. Morrisons have red diesel for65p or less and none of this 60/40 squit. you just buy it.

Where I moor on my swinging mooring I have no other option but to use cans.

We arrive with the 4 cans and stow in a locker. Then after the days activities we fill the boat which usually takes all 4 cans or most of it and take the empty cans back with us in our little rib tender. This way we always have a full boat.

If I get a Kad 32 this would also be my plan with Diesel. The price I quoted was what I paid recently for red diesel for a dumper and digger on a DIY project.

I don't want to pay marina prices. As I have said before my swing mooring about 100 yards from the boat yard costs me £95 per year.

Sadly now being out of work I need to try and boat as cheaply as we can. Could get another job but enjoying the freedom at the moment

How does the 60/40 split work for mobos? I would think that a 97/3 split would be more accurate?

Just thinking of filling in the form for a 130ft Sunseeker. Honest guv most of my fuel goes on heating and cooking

OK I'm off. The heat is getting to me.
