Conwy

by NikTheGeek » 08 May 2017, 09:17

Had a lovely trip out to Conwy at the weekend, without the boat. But I noticed a couple of things:

1. Nobody manning the slipway - or charging for car parking. So I could have taken my boat and launched for free without renewing the yearly licence!

2. The amount of speeding through the marina area was quite surprising. They were mainly ski boats and ribs, but flying through on the plane instead of observing the 10mph speed limit. No sign of any patrol to keep them in check.

Has the season not started? I thought it was manned and policed from early April?

Nick

Aye, if you trawl through my posts you will note I have mentioned the problem of nuisance bastards and my use of Amanzi's horn. She has a very loud horn and guaranteed to make you spill your G&T. Quite often I might even tootle after them in the tender and give my best GoG rendition of you silly twat F O! I have even written snotty letters to his majesty the Harbour Master telling him to get off his fat arse and police his harbour. But the problem really lies with day trippers who do it in blind ignorance or couldn't give a toss. Mostly the latter. The fine for infraction starts at £50k. Therein lies the problem. Maybe if the fines started at a more reasonable rate of a couple hundred you may be able to enforce the rules without having to drag it through courts because you are not going to get 50k from some poor sod on a jetski and the courts aren't going to throw him in jail for being a tosser and who doesn't have 50k to splash out on a fine. Catch 22.

As for parking and launching it's a bit hit and miss. Beacons really only gets monitored when it gets very busy and then policed to ensure that it runs smoothly. i.e. no drunks etc. or taken over by non boaters parking up and blocking trailer access. If it's quiet all this is not necessary. It's not run as a business per se.

Judging from the time this photo was taken, ~ 2pm on Sunday given the state of tide Beacons would have been dangerous to use in even a good 4x4. Many a tow car has chanced the shingles only to be caught by the incoming tide. At 8m and 7 knt flow your car wont stand a chance. You might even have seen me out on my tender too. We took the tenders out for a beach day a couple of miles further out to Penmaenwaer. On calm water they go like stink, great fun.

We were down in the town just on the falling tide as the ski boats were coming back in. Beautiful conditions and it made me wish I'd taken the boat and had a quick ski up river. But at least I'd have watched the speed limit! :)

I assume you're in the marina rather than one of the harbour berths?

Me in a marina? In the ghetto? Cramped cheek by jowl sharing the effluent of my slum mates? No effing way mate. I got me a room with a view in front of the castle. :D And not just any old pontoon neither. :D Moving up in the world I share mine with just the Harbour Master. I think he wants to keep an eye on me an all
