The Solent mid afternoon today

by Ianfs » 23 Feb 2017, 21:52

I took a few minutes out today to see if Storm Doris was chucking up the Solent, but forgot it was low tide. Some of it is a bit boring and I apologise for the music and the editing and some spelling mistakes, I know some of you are the mutts nuts at this sort of thing. What I don't understand though is that it was filmed in HD, but You Tube seems to show it in very poor quality. :(

Hey ho, hope you enjoy it anyway. It is better in full screen :)

Nice video Ian, I wanted to know how fast the ebb is at the entrance to Christchurch and now I know....

Going to do sea trial tomorrow afternoon, weather is forecast F2 so should be ok.

My merc 75 has had carb strip and clean so a full power run needed to confirm all is well before removing it and fitting the BF 135.

Wish me luck!

Hi Nick,
I've been boating on the Solent and surrounding area's since I was a lad and to be fair, mainly in the in the deep waters. This area has lots of inlets, small harbours and shifting sands which can be difficult, indeed information from Haven Wardens can also be quite misleading.

I am now a new boy to living in the area and have seen the tide ripping through the Run at a much higher pace both flood and ebb and depending upon when, some 4-8 knts, interestingly my video shows it as a tad tame, although having said that, it's quite benign at either turn. Your Fletcher would have no issues at any time as long as you have enough water underneath you.

For me, the best information I have gathered so far living here is that if there is high surface pressure at any time, it pays to note the tide height predictions and reduce by at least a metre, to be cautious, it also pays to note chart datum.

There's a high pushing in from the Southern Atlantic with spaced isobars around the South Coast, winds WNW swinging to NW so should flatten the sea nicely for you tomorrow. Let me know if you need any help. :)

Plays in HD just fine here.

You can:

(a) Click on the "cog" in the bottom right of the playing video and select the quality
(b) Depending on the way that the forum references video you may be able to append "&vq=hd720" to the url that is embedded.

Hi Ian,

Thanks for your reply.

I should be down at the Lymington public slipway around 2.30 ish.

If the engine runs well enough we are going out to try a full speed run, if not we will limp back in with tails between our legs.

If you are around, do pop down and assuming engine all right you can come out with us - we won't be long, just enough to capture full speed on video!

I have PM's you my mobile.

Thanks

The Entrance to Mudeford is great fun if you get it right. If you muck up it can really spoil your day! As Ian said it can run up to 8 knots on the ebb springs with some pretty large standing waves. If there is a strong SW wind as well the main car park can flood a couple of feet deep which is also fun.

Best time to come in is HW slack or on a gentle flood tide. Avoid low tide because the channel moves about and the channel markers are not always correctly placed, especially early season.

We've come in there on the plane coming back from fishing with 5 knots S.O.G. and 12 knots through the water :D

Thanks Martin, that's weird cos when I looked yesterday the only option was Auto or 360p. :? It's now showing all the other resolutions up to 1080p, well I never! One day I may get to be as good at this Video production lark as you, but some of the other stuff you talk about like your boat monitor computer goes straight over my head.

Hi Nick, sorry I missed you, just sent you a text, well actually it says its an MMS so hope you got it . :D

I'd forgotten Colin knows The Run really well, sorry young man. I think he must have been in and out of that area more times than I've had fish and chips.

YouTube processes your video after you upload it, converting it to the format's they support. They do this gradually so not all the format's appear immediately.

Hopefully a few more times this year if the weather is with us :) If you fancy it I'll have a word with Tom and see if he can squeeze another on board :) Now you're local.

Can never predict when but as you're (semi) retired hopefully you can get time off.
