Advice needed

by NickG » 14 Feb 2017, 13:39

Hi I'm new to all this so any advice would be greatly recieved. I have just purchased a 14ft dejon type boat. I currently own a Johnson 6hp outboard that I think can be used in conjunction with teleflex steering and throttle control, but will it be powerful enough ? My aim initially is to learn how to use it ! I was thinking i would go to Windermere and use it there to start with then maybe once I've got to grips with it all I might be abit more adventurous and take it on the sea ?

Any advice ?

Many thanks

Hello Nick and welcome

I think a 6 hp will push the little 14 ft dejon along ok on Windermere and it will also teach you some aspects of boating particularly launch and recovery. She will be quite slow however and probably wont get you much faster than 6 knots. which is fine if you just want to pootle about.

If you went coastal however a 6 hp would be quite slow against a strong tide.

What is the max engine you can put on your boat this info should be on the plate on the transom

Hope this helps a bit

That is a decent combo for her. She is really a river and lakes boat and not suitable for the sea in anything but the calmest waters as she has a tendency to roll and ship water due to her hull and low freeboard. A 6hp motor would also struggle against some tides and currents here. I'd cut my teeth on her and then move on to a fast fisher style boat if you are happy with her. Probably not the advice you wanted to hear. Welcome to boating :D

Thank you very much for the advice as I said all advice is welcomed at this stage. Whilst it's not exactly what I wanted to hear it does sound like it will be ok for a start into boating which I am really looking forward to. I'm calling it a dejon but realistically I don't know ! Either way I can get a good feel for it all and hopefully it will grow into something all the family can get into,.

Post some pictures of your actual boat and someone might be able to identify her
