Trip out Sunday

by Ianfs » 28 Sep 2015, 09:38

As the forecast was for a lovely weekend, we decided to make one last trip in the small boat, before she goes up for sale to a loving home. We had friends over on Saturday for the Rugby so missed out on a 2 day run but hoped Sunday would be good. We awoke to the sun coming over from the Surrey side looking warm. I had brought the boat to the house the night before so she was ready. We decided to just go rather than taking a lunch, we had some Nachos for snacks and would then have lunch in the cheeky little Italian restaurant at the Marina complex. The forecast was clear skies but winds of 11-12 mph gusting 20mph, NE. At Newhaven North Easterlies flatten the Sea so we though we would give it a go.

Massive high tide with the Super Moon at 7m above chart datum and low tide of only .6m, which for Newhaven is big. We arrived an hour before top of the tide and already the water was almost at the top of the slip. There were some boats waiting ready to come in that were bigger than ours, a Maxum Cuddy 2300 and a large rib and another small Fletcher. The Maxum had poked its nose out of the Harbour and turned back, but the rib had engine trouble. The Fletcher had also got to the end on the breakwater and turned round. The guys in the Maxum had been out on Saturday and threw in that it was as flat as a pancake....just our luck eh? By this time Laura was already looking a little green at the prospect so I decided that if it was still bad by the time we got going we could pop up the Ouse to Lewis. We launched and cleared exiting the Harbour with Newhaven Radio on Channel 12 (always very polite and friendly bunch of lads) and headed for the sea. At the traffic lights a fishing boat was coming in and one of the fisherman motioned his hand in a big wave like fashion and shouted it was rough. We got to the entrance and we bouncing around. Now I might have tried it but I've mentioned this before that Laura is not so good in small boats. We went a little further and found the wavelength was a bit dodgy for a bowrider so I thought the better part of valour would be to have a poodle up river instead.

We've never wanted to go up river before because the Environment Agency had managed the banks and dredged it so it has been a bit plain, but we were pleasantly surprised, it made a very pleasant trip, not quite as picturesque as the Thames but not bad just the same. Here are some shots to give you an idea..........................

I wonder if these are cheap mooring?

I debated whether to put this shot in but you can just see the dog in the water, it seems to have been a popular spot for dog walkers, on the way up river there were Labs playing and launching themselves for a swim.

You can see this from the main road, its a reasonably new Eco Incinerator built a few years ago. A number of locals objected to it, but I think it looks quite funky.

Tides dropped a couple of feet already. On the way up we just got under the swing bridge.

I can only assume they have a lot of Cormorants in Newhaven.

Lastly I took a video coming from the river into the Harbour, of some of the fishing boats and the massive all weather lifeboat. It's a bit shaky so sorry about that not very good but I thought it was a good opportunity to get some shots of our fishing community and the lifeboat. At the end are the new build flats and apartments.

Nice write up Ian, always good to get out, even if it is just a trundle up a river, very relaxing I bet.
The picture which the caravans.. That was where my boat was kept before I brought it. Denton marine I think if I remember correctly.

Nice write up and pics Ian.

One of our 'Must Do's' for next year is some river cruising, it strikes me as being very relaxing.

Ed
It made me chuckle when I saw it and took the snap, as you can see by the emoticon.

I think you're right, yes Denton. It's really weird, all that area in flood, yet when eventually brought the boat round the one way after lunch etc, it had dried out!

Absolutely, a complete change and one with which sea capable boat owners can have the best of both worlds, fast sea action and a little R&R. Not really something you can do with a Viking river boat or similar.

good to see you got out Ian, we made it too St Ives (Cambs) and a trip out through Godmanchster & lunch on the Gt Ouze. Nice river lots of house boats & big properties to be amazed at. We keep having discussions on a cruising boat with moorings (cheap as chips up here) but I just can't be drawn to a river where it takes a days cruise to see a new farmers field and your limited to the same stretch of river on most weekends (yawn) unless you go for a week far away. Nice lifestyle living on a house boat but I get the feeling its all social events more than boating.
