Boat Engines etc - Maintenance and Repair

Engine serial number

by shibbs » 04 Apr 2015, 18:14

Can anyone on here shed some light on something that confused me a little this afternoon... (yes i know It's not hard :D )

Whilst fiddling around under and around the back of the engine this afternoon starting a service / general check over etc, i noticed that my Mercruiser Aplha one V8,...
has a Volvo Penta tally on the block :?

I meant to take a pic of it but forgot, will do next time i'm down there.

Any ideas anyone?

Alpha one refers to the stern drive not the engine.

Both Volvo and mercruiser early V8 engines have the same heritage in a small block Chevy V8 so it is possible some mix and match can happen.

That'll be a first for me, I've never seen a Volvo engine matched to a Mercruiser Stern Drive and visa versa. From your pictures you have got an Alpha One and it looks like a Gen 11.
What's a Volvo penta tally? Do you mean a bill of some kind?
It could be that a Volvo part or parts have been used at some stage where Mercruiser parts were not available. They share some similarities.
Photos would be good.
